WOXY to Relocate

...as one of the leading factors that has kept Southwestern Ohio informed about the best new music for nearly 30 years, WOXY has been an invaluable resource both as a terrestrial and internet-based radio station. An announcement early this morning indicated that WOXY will be following the trend of many Rust Belt companies by relocating to the South, specifically Austin, TX. The move makes sense, as the WOXY folks did extensive work there at last year's SXSW festival, courting over 20 up-and-coming acts to participate in the Lounge Acts sessions. Surely, this loss will send shockwaves through our regional scene for some time to come, as WOXY helped to shine a spotlight on new talent, as well as bringing countless touring bands to the area. The mere presence of WOXY in our region will be sorely missed....

Yet another rat clawing its way off the sinking ship that is Dayton. Can you blame them?

I understand the move and realize that as an internet station they did not have as much of a local impact as they did when they were over the air. It still saddens me a bit. They still had an impact and are a top notch internet radio station who we in Dayton had access to. They were ours in a way and now they are leaving. Oh well. They will surely re-gain a higher profile in a place like Austin. That will be good for them.

I do think though that as bad as things get around here, there is still room for people to do great things. If we could keep from sulking and see that we have a cheap place to live and freedom to do whatever we want, then I think there is hope. Moving to bigger cities may bring more options and connections but it also means that the bills are higher and there is a lot more clutter.

Wow Mr. Ingram, I couldn't have said it better!

I'll also add that while it does make sad and sulky that the station that taught me about some of my favorite bands is leaving our area, I'm glad to know that they will be able to carry on and although it's from Austin, I'll still be able to hear them.

As a former general manager of a radio station, I understand how hard the decision must've been for the WOXY crew. It's an understatement to say that what's best for the continuation of the station as an entity and what the listeners think is best from an outside perspective does not always jive perfectly.

As a Daytonian, I understand that everyone's feeling a little raw about losing another area institution.

And as a current radio station employee and host with the luxury to be creative, I consider this simply another reason why I should continue to create and develop what I'm doing...and hope that others (not just in the radio world) in the area will do the same.

Yes, people and companies big and small are leaving. If there's a time to try to bounce back, now is it. There's extra room being provided, if you're gonna do something, do it NOW and do it BIG. Blogs, podcasts, small business, venues....seriously. Posting in forums, facebook, and myspace isn't going to accomplish anything. Do it now before there's no one left to care.
