FILM: Mellodrama: The Mellotron Documentary

...odds are, you've probably heard The Beatles' "Strawberry Fields Forever". Or The Moody Blues. Or King Crimson. If you have, you know about the legendary instrument, the mellotron. Well, we came across this new film, Mellodrama: The Mellotron Documentary. Done by Diana Dilworth, the film features interviews with such notables as Brian Wilson, Jon Brion, and Rick Neilsen. Check the clip:

...maybe someone knows how to get a screening in Dayton?

For those interested, the Optigan is also a pretty remarkable little sample based instrument. Soundwaves were encoded onto optical discs like they are written onto the side of 35mm sound film, and played back.

Was made as a toy but has been used very creatively by many folks. Jon Brion used one extensively on the Eternal Sunshine soundtrack.

The optigan is in the film, along with the birotron, a keyboard financed by Rick Wakeman that used 8-tracks for the sounds.
