INTRODUCING: Modern Mondays @ Pacchia

...we're always very excited to hear about new weekly events taking place here in Dayton. Even better is when they're free, right? Well, here's a new free weekly event we'd like to announce: Modern Mondays @ Pacchia [410 E. Fifth St. in the Oregon District]. Under the guidance of your host, Adam Sabin [of New Vega], Modern Mondays is fueled by its audience. The idea is pretty simple: bring in new music you'd like to share and Sabin will spin it. Seems like a good way to find out about new music, right? Right...

...On top of that, Sabin is giving local bands an opportunity to spin their latest tracks for his audience. Tonight, he'll be hosting Electric Banana, who will be spinning their recently-released sophomore effort, Black Rubber [preview below]. Next week, Sabin will be hosting Stone the Mayor Sheriffs, who will be spinning their debut EP and having a "Pie the Mayor Sheriffs" pie throwing contest. outside we'll have a pie throwing station set up. Members of STMS will stand at the pie station and contestants will stand on a line and attempt to throw pies to the face of STMS. We're looking forward to who else might show up soon....

...yet another great reason to stop in: Sabin will be giving out some free concert tickets. This week he'll have some tix for Modest Mouse at Lifestyles Pavilion in Columbus on August 24th. Next week, tix for Ra Ra Riot at The Basement in Columbus on September 14...

...Sabin will also be hosting special guest DJs in coming weeks, including Jason Watkins [of Mouth of the Architect] and Nick Testa [Nighbeast]. Modern Mondays kicks off at 9 pm every Monday. If you're at all inclined to get yr band heard or would like to take a turn at sharing the music yr loving these days, we highly recommend you stop in and check it out...

Mouth of the Architect/Nightbeast/Wet Leather/The Sound For Language @ Pearl 6.5.08

...as the temperature rose to perilous levels in the Gem City, virtually the only reprieve that could be found was in the confines of the Pearl. Surely a heavy dose of rock n' roll served up Dayton-style would provide sweet relief. Opening the evening, The Sound for Language served up giant slabs of guttural rock. On the strength of the material from their recently-released second EP, The Sound for Language thrives on impeccable lines of harmony guitars and throbbing rhythms. With an impressive set, the band set up an evening that simply never disappointed...

...Next up were the recently-reunited Wet Leather. Moving between sludgy riffage and sleazy funk, we're excited to see this outfit in action again. On this particular evening the band were joined by local icon Jeremy Fredricks on vocals for an Agent Orange cover. While the band did not hold the audience at attention for much of their set, they continued to deliver a high-energy set that simply never let up...

...taking the evening to unexpected levels, Nightbeast, attired in a Batman outfit on this night, prowled the stage like a championship fighter poised to strike at any time. Strike he did, with an endless stream of deftly placed pop culture references that hit like well-timed jabs. As he incited the audience into a number of chants and skits, Nightbeast even regaled us with an acoustic number, lulling us into a false calm. By the end of his brief set Nightbeast echoed Muhammad Ali with his boasts and claims. On this night, these were well-founded...

...closing the evening, Mouth of the Architect's enormous sound simply could not be held in by the confines of the Pearl. On the cusp of the release of the new album, Quiet, MOTA is clearly a band at the top of their game. While the PA may not have been able to properly translate the dense melodic layers buried under waves of grind, it seemed to matter little to the audience who reveled in the sheer force of the band's sound...

Mouth of the Architect/Nightbeast/Wet Leather/The Sound For Language-Tonight @ Pearl

...as the city heats up and Thursday continues to become the new Friday, the Gem City offers up yet another bill filled with Dayton's finest tonight at Pearl. As they gear up to release their new album, Quietly, on Translation Loss next month and set out for an extended US jaunt in August and September, Mouth of the Architect will make a rare Dayton appearance this evening. An equally rare sighting of the indescribable force of nature that is Nightbeast is also slated for tonight, along with the recently-revived Wet Leather. Opening the evening will be The Sound for Language, who recently self-released their second EP. This is more rock than you can handle. Get there....

Translation Loss to release new Mouth of the Architect album this summer

...according to sources within the band, Mouth of the Architect will release their new album, Quietly, on the Translation Loss label on July 22. While a CD release show and subsequent tour are planned at this point, specifics continue to remain elusive. For now, head over to the band's Myspace page and check out the teaser track "Hate and Heartache", which opens with moody spoken voice over crystalline guitars before finally giving way to the giant, sludgy riffing that is the cornerstone of the band's sound. Stay tuned to The Buddha Den for more information at it becomes available...

Quietly

...after a couple of months of hiatus and lineup changes, local purveyors of doom, Mouth of the Architect emerged today with a new demo for the song "Quitely", which is now up on their Myspace page. With it's brooding tempo and soaring guitar lines, it seems to be a bit more hypnotic than some of their previous work, nodding more towards Neurosis or Explosions in the Sky than some of the more apparent hardcore/screamo tendencies the band has favored in the past. So far, we're liking what we hear and can't wait for more from MOTA in 2008....

Legalize Gassett!!!

Tomorrow night should be more than anyone can handle....

Over at the rarely-used Gilly's, we've got a fantastic local bill. Captain of Industry, 8-Bit Revival, John Gassett's new project Goatherd, and the recently reconfigured Mouth of the Architect are poised to have one of the best local shows of the season. If you want to know more about the "benefit" aspect of the show, ask someone there....

Meanwhile...up Fifth Street at the Nite Owl, touring juggernauts The Story Changes will make an appearance before their Dayton Music Fest set next weekend. Also on the bill will be Simply Waiting, Accidently on Purpose, and Fairweather Fan....

One more good show on Saturday...over at the Oregon Express, a little lighter fare with Wes Tirey opening for Sleepybird, who will be heading out on tour in the next few weeks...

This should be a good warm-up for the Dayton Music Fest next weekend....

Mouth of the Architect is not dead

Despite recent rumors to the contrary, Mouth of the Architect has not disbanded. From MOTA HQ:
Yes we're obviously not disbanded. Our original guitarist/vocalist is back in the band, and we have an actual full time bassist finally. This benefit for our friend jon (gassett. the show is on Sept. 29 at Gilly's) will be our last show for some time as we have plans to write a new record.
There you have it. We're very glad to hear that MOTA will continue on.
