Jonathan Hape/Andrew Smith - Tonight @ Nite Owl

...near the end of a two-week Midwestern jaunt, Jonathan Hape will make a final stop in Dayton on his way back home to Columbus tonight at the Nite Owl. Although performing solo in support of his Herbivore EP, Hape employs all manner of technology both digital and analog to create a lush, inviting sonic sheet. While you might liken him to The Postal Service, Boards of Canada, and more, Hape has a distinctive sound and is starting to make waves. Catch him now on the way up....

...opening the evening will be Andrew Smith of Andrew & the Pretty Punchers. His recent solo performance at Gem City Records indicated to us that with or without his band, Smith is one of this town's great talents....

Limbeck/John Ralston/Mascot/John Gassett/The New Frontiers @ Nite Owl 2.24.08

...upon arriving at the Nite Owl, we were hardly shocked to find that a fifth band had been added to the Do Tell bill on this evening. Fortunately, the show started early and opener The New Frontiers (from Dallas) turned in a powerful, short set. Reminding us of everything from Teenage Fanclub to post-Byrds Gene Clark, we'd love to see these guys come back through Dayton (sorry, no photos. technical difficulties)...

...taking the evening in a more intimate direction, John Gassett delivered a dozen or so fleeting gems tempered by self-effacing banter. With such sublime melodic gifts and a penchant for brevity, we'd love to see more of Gassett out and about...

...as Mascot bridged the gap between the intimate and the rock, we arrived firmly back in rock n' roll mode as John Ralston and his band took the stage. With such an enthusiastic and finely honed band, Ralston's material sparkled and grabbed the audience's collective ear. Even during the few songs Ralston performed solo acoustic, the momentum and intensity of his set remained. As guitar hooks and impeccable vocal harmonies drifted across the room, smiles beamed back at Ralston and his band...

...as headliners Limbeck hit the stage, it quickly became evident that this was to be a drunken endurance test. Handing out tambourines to a pair of audients nearby (a move which we cannot condone), the crowd surged toward the stage and joined in the fray. With sun-scorched British melodies in spades and a beer-soaked joviality, Limbeck drew the evening, and the weekend, to a conclusion...

Do Tell Records Presents: Limbeck/John Raslton/Mascot/John Gassett - Tonight @ Nite Owl

...as an icy, wintry weekend comes to a close, the good kids over at Do Tell Records have an excellent bill of unpredictable rock n' roll on tap at the Nite Owl. Headliners Limbeck allegedly self-destructed on stage the last time they stopped in Dayton. They're out on tour with John Ralston, formerly of Dashboard Confessional. Local openers Mascot and John Gassett will offer up their own distinctive solo sets. You might wanna check this one out if you don't want to just hear about it tomorrow....

Robert Pollard Is Off To Business

...it seems as if even the largely agreeable Merge Records could not even satisfy the beast that is Robert Pollard. Despite an unruly release schedule, Pollard has left Merge to start his own label. Here's the lowdown from robertpollard.net...

After amicably departing Merge Records after 4 albums in two years, Robert Pollard Is Off To Business will be Robert Pollard's only proper "Robert Pollard" full-length for 2008, released on Robert Pollard's new Guided By Voices Inc. label.

At 10 songs in 35 minutes, it's an extraordinary rock tour de force. Robert Pollard Is Off To Business sports Todd Tobias' cleanest and meanest production yet, giant songs and riffs that pack a wallop, and arguably Pollard's finest singing ever captured on record. For Pollard, whose albums normally run 15-25 songs, this 10-song work (the majority 3:30 or longer) is a departure from form. Since freeing himself of a band in 2004, his albums have each had very distinct and varied flavors, and his creativity has flowered.

In stores: June 2, 2008. The release coincides with Fantagraphics' Town Of Mirrors: The Reassembled Imagery of Robert Pollard, a lavish coffee-table book retrospective of Pollard's collage art and lyrics, as well as several Pollard art exhibits.

Robert Pollard Is Off To Business will be released on Pollard's new label, Guided By Voices, Inc. The first release on GBV Inc. will be a 3-song EP released April 8, available only through www.robertpollard.net. The limited edition EP (cd & 12" 33 1/3
vinyl) will include one album standout "Weatherman And Skin Goddess" plus two exclusive non-album tracks.

...it will be interesting to see how this changes things for Pollard, what with his legendary output now under his own control. Stay tuned....

The Northwest Ordinance CD Release Show w/The Lions Rampant & The Goody Two Shoes 2.16.08

...on a rather mild Saturday night for February, we wandered down the Oregon Express to catch we were certain was to be a grand night of raunchy rock n' roll. Well, let us say we were by no means disappointed....

...as we arrived, there seemed to be a bit of stir over opener Waterbear's early dismissal from the stage. Various accounts circulated as to the reasoning, but it seemed as if the evening had started late and was running behind, thus the soundman made a judgment call to cut their set short. Alas, the rock pressed on as The Goody Two Shoes took the stage, dressed impeccably in vintage attire as always. With requisite technical difficulties and tuning a standing concern, the band still managed to throw out a handful of somewhat engaging tunes. While the audience seemed to enjoy it, we continue to be bemused by the whole experience....

...we then made an attempt to swing over to the Nite Owl and catch some of the more nuanced indie pop flavors on tap this evening. We rolled in just in time to catch the beginning of Pomegranate's set, who were up from Cincinnati. With their audience fully in singalong mode, the band launched into some perfectly crafted indie pop, guitars winding fluidly around the steady pulsations of the rhythm section as the songs gracefully variated between subtle and bombastic, often recalling a litany of 80s British guitar heroes. While we only caught a few songs, we're eager to hear more from this young band...

...upon returning to the Oregon Express, the stage erupted with the sound of Cincinnati's The Lions Rampant. With this being their second visit to the Gem City within a month, the audience was primed for the band's blistering brand of blues-infused garage. Digging deep into the most primal elements of rock n' roll, The Lions Rampant remind us all that rock n' roll is, in fact, very much alive...

...in celebration of the release of their debut album, State of Ohio, The Northwest Ordinance took to the stage in Mexican wrestling masks and proceeded to launch into their patented brand of staggering punk. Drifting from straightforward punk to staggering, lurching rhythms, the band demonstrated its unique range of interpretation. While some implied that a little more shine would be nice, it seems as if this band thrives on the brink of collapse. As the band mixed in new material alongside songs from their album, the audience whipped itself into a frenzy, concluding the evening in pure rock n' roll bliss...

Grizzzzy Bear/Choir of Two Ohm Cicadas @ Front St. 2.15.08

...(we apologize in advance for a lack of visual evidence to accompany this report. Due to technical difficulties, we were unable to photograph this evening. In our defense, we are a small outfit and, to be quite honest, any photography would not have done the event justice.)...

....buried deep in the back of the Front Street complex, Dethfits' base of operations doubled as a venue on this particular evening. As we navigated through the ice fields and made our way into the cavernous space, we learned we had arrived just after My Latex Brain had finished. Next up would be the Choir of Two Ohm Cicadas, who we knew precious little about. The duo proceeded to launch into what was largely derided by this audience. While we here at The Buddha Den relish good noise rock and ambient offerings, on this particular evening Choir of Two Ohm Cicadas offered us little in the way of any texturing or subtle melodic content which would drive music of this style. A trace of melody would bubble up on occasion, but for the most part the grind of the band's sound was simply more than anyone could really tolerate on this evening. Perhaps a shorter set might have been the ticket...

...as the audience regrouped, local faves Grizzzzy Bear prepared to hit the stage for the second time this week. Struggling through some early technical difficulties, the band opened again with a new piece that strongly favors the band's metal tendencies. While it is obviously a work-in-progress, on this night the band seemed somewhat more comfortable with the piece. Hopefully the band will iron out their ideas and trim it down to a manageable piece. As Grizzzzzy Bear proceeded with their set, they laid heavily into some their best tracks off their debut disc. The audience lurched back at the band, singing along with some of the most infectious songs in Dayton at the moment. As Grizzzzy Bear seems to be embracing a more muscular, metal edge these days, we are curious to see if they will succeed in integrating this element into their eclectic amalgam which was so successful on their debut disc, or if they will abandon the melodies in favor of the grind. With the inclusion of a cover of "Blitzkreig Bop" near the end of their set, we're a little anxious to find out. Time will tell....

....we apologize for not having reports on sets by Akillis Green and Switchblade Serenade (who were performing as a trio on this evening). If anyone has the lowdown, we'd love to hear it...

On hand you have the politically-charged industrial grind of My Latex Brain (whose new album, Good as Dead, hits on Feb 29), one of our favorites Grizzzzy Bear, the cowpunk of Akillis Green, the gutter/garage/trash of Switchblade Serenade, and the rarely-seen Choir of 2 Ohm Cicadas. Grizzzzy Bear/Toads and Mice @ Pearl 2.12.08

...despite the unsavory weather, and despite the inability of the club to open its doors on time, for everyone who made the trip out to Pearl last evening, we were treated to incredibly powerful sets by two of Dayton's finest young bands...

...opening the evening (albeit well past schedule), Toads and Mice launched into their set with steely precision tempered with earnest and unbridled passion. Yet again, Toads and Mice proved to us why they are truly one of the most captivating bands in Dayton at the moment. With unfailing accuracy, Toads and Mice navigated their way through gentle passages, grinding guitar work, and bouncy rhythms, engaging the audience at every turn...

...after The Buddha Den awarded our winners from our CD giveaway yesterday, Grizzzzy Bear veered their ship into a grueling metal introduction that left us somewhat baffled. Throughout their set on this evening, the band continued to intimate at a more muscular approach to the material, all but abandoning much of the pop sensibilities that initially endeared us to their debut disc. In some cases, the heavier sound solidified the material. However, in some of the extended interludes, we caught several audience members losing interest. Perhaps as the band continues to refine their sound with the new lineup (yes, it appears as if they have a full-time keyboardists once again) the promise we hear on their album may finally come to fruition in the live setting. Regardless, the capacity crowd loved Grizzzzy Bear and throughout the set pressed closer and closer to the band, hoping to catch a glimpse....

....as the bands gave way to L'Eighties Night's 2 Year Anniversary Party, DJs Jay and Heather took the tables and threw out the 80s jams and kept the people dancing...

...we'd like to thank Jay and Heather at L'Eighties Night for letting us host the bands. We'd like to thank Toads and Mice & Grizzzzy Bear for playing. We'd like to thank Squids Eye Records for providing the giveaway CDs. Finally, we'd like to thank all of you for coming out, braving the horrendous weather, and making our first show a huge success. THANK YOU!!!

Pretty & Nice Sign to Hardly Art

...after a trio of stops in Dayton last year, Boston's Pretty & Nice won us over with their frenetic, angular indie rock. For anyone who was fortunate enough to catch them, the energy and craft of the band was apparent. Well, others have also found it apparent as the Hardly Art label has signed the band and will put out their forthcoming disc. The ubiquitous Pitchfork also took notice and threw in their two cents. Consider this your notice, kids: Pretty & Nice will be making a tour stop in Dayton on March 20 with tourmates Exit Clov on their way back from South By Southwest. You won't want to miss this one...

Sleepybird @ Peach's 2.8.08

...on our first report from this fine Yellow Springs venue, we were excited to bring you our first coverage on one of our longtime favorites, Sleepybird. On this particular evening, we found the band in high spirits, despite missing one member. No matter. Sleepbird's patented post-modern country waltzes and plaintive sentimentality brought beaming smiles from the audience throughout their two sets, which were punctuated by a victory lap by some of the band around the club. As the band worked through the material from their forth-coming album, we found ourselves likening some of the more bombastic material to Arcade Fire-meets-Exile On Main St.-era Stones and were blown away with the virtuostic viola work. Needless to say, our hopes are high for the band in the coming months...
