Pitchfork Examines History of the MP3

...in the modern day, the ubiquitous MP3 seems to be one of the pillars of music distribution and consumption. What's more, it's leveled the playing field to such a degree that it has nearly overwhelmed casual listeners. In their dash to the end of the decade, Pitchfork has taken an extensive look at how the MP3 has changed virtually every aspect of music listening, production, and distribution over the last decade. You can read this article HERE [be warned: it's gonna take you a while]. You can also look back on some of the best singles from the decade while yr there...

VIDEO: Pitchfork ADD-The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

...earlier this week Pitchfork served up a great new clip in their A-D-D series in which a band is selected to record straight to 8-track cassette while video is shot of the performance. Pretty cool idea. This time around, P4K headed out to get some footage of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. Intermingling party footage with the quartet crammed into a tiny bathroom. From the Mardi Gras cake to the kids hanging out, it almost seems like a trailer to a film from 1985. Check it out...

....head on over here to check out the last three clips from the session....

VIDEO: Jesus Lizard "Destroy Before Read/Puss"

...in honor of Touch and Go Records' announcement earlier this week that they would be scaling back their operations, the kids over at Pitchfork decided to put up some reminders of why this is such a big deal. Culled from a 1994 performance, the site put up a clip of The Jesus Lizard tearing through a pair of tunes. You can check that clip out over here. We thought we might throw one of our favorites, "Mouth Breather" up for you as well...

For those of you old enough to remember, this should be a nice retro trip. For everyone else, let this be a reminder...

The Gluons get Pitchforked

...as one of the first of the new wave of Dayton bands to garner some notice outside of the Gem City, fuzz-pop wunderkinds The Gluons recently got a little love from the coalition of cool, Pitchfork. The site waxed favorable in their review of the track "Modern Late at Nights"(which we featured back in January on our Winter 2008 Sampler), off the band's debut, Meet the Gluons. Hopefully this is just the beginning...

NEWS: Pitchfork to launch Pitchfork.tv April 7

...we're that most of you had high hopes for MTV at some point in your life. You know, maybe you'd keep finding cool music on there and see good videos. Especially once MTV2 came around. Yeah, we were pretty disappointed as well...it seems as if the ubiquitous Pitchfork doesn't find the status quo acceptable either and have taken it upon themselves to change the way the game is played. Engaging all forms of technology and taking an end around every visible barrier to entry, Pitchfork announced yesterday that beginning April 7 they will launch Pitchfork.tv, a free, online music channel dedicated independent music. They promise on-demand content featuring music videos, exclusive performances, new and rare documentaries, and more. We suppose if anyone has the ability to do this, it would be Pitchfork. Get ready kids, the game's about to change....

sons and daughters

...it's just like '94 today as Pitchfork ran features on both The Breeders and Robert Pollard. In an interview with Kim Deal, she covers everything from her writing process to why the Pixies aren't going to do anything else to the upcoming album Mountain Battles to an on-stage interview with sister Kelley and recording guru and longtime collaborator Steve Albini at 3 am for charity...

...as if there isn't enough Robert Pollard material in circulation to establish his own wing of Library of Congress, here comes a regular. Due out Feb 12 is a single by The Takeovers, Little Green Onion Man(pictured above). In addition to Chris Slusarenko, this one features members of The Decembrists and Quasi...
