Yakuza Heart Attack/Anamanaguchi/Astro Fang/Starscream @ Blind Bob's 8.14.09

...while it had been some time since we'd been out to Blind Bob's for a rock show [forgive us, dear readers], the summer air seemed to beckon to the masses, filling the venue to near-capacity during this evening. Perhaps you'd also have to factor in that last night was only the second showcase for the much-loved Squids Eye Records in 2009....

...Even early in the night for the opening set of Brooklyn's Starscream, the venue was percolating with activity. While we had sampled some of the band's songs, seeing them in a live setting was an entirely unexpected event. First and foremost, we simply had no idea that the majority of the band's music was composed and performed using only a Nintendo Gameboy. Yes, you read that correctly. While some may cringe at the mere notion of such blatant non-traditionalism, rest assured the presentation and the music itself was nothing sort of stellar. While the onset of a free-for-all dance party never quite manifested, it was perhaps the most engaged audience we've see for an opening act in quite some time...

...rather unexpectedly, we next came face to face with one of Dayton's most popular, and in our opinion, most talented outfits, Astro Fang. With the band celebrating the release of their long-awaited debut disc [albeit an EP], we expected they would take the stage much later in the evening. Alas, it was fortuitous for the band to play early, as by this point the crowd was already reaching a critical mass [no small feat for a Dayton crowd pre-midnight], and the energy in the room was palpable. Despite, or perhaps because of, whispered tones circulating the room suggesting that this was likely to be the band's swan song, from the fist note, Astro Fang delivered a collection of tunes that has served as the meat of the band's set for the better part of a year. What was so astonishing for us was how the band tore through the material as if it was fresh off the drawing board. From the cascading metallic guitar runs to infectiously twitchy synths to the unrelenting singalong choruses of the alternate-universe hits "Lovers" and "Passing", Astro Fang proved, yet again, why they are considered to be amongst the current Dayton musical elite...

...with lights dimmed and video projections running amok, NY quartet Anamanaguchi stepped into the void and slowly but surely won over a typically suspect Gem City crowd. As their beats got people moving and the guitar-played synth lines reeled in listeners, Anamanaguchi proved the theory of a well-placed cover in a set. Just as the crowd's curiosity was piqued, the band dropped into the utterly unanticipated cover of Weezer's "Buddy Holly" prompting everyone in the room into singalong and completely winning over the evening....

...with their first public appearance in a year, Yakuza Heart Attack took to the stage in support of their new album, II and proved yet again that, despite their relative inactivity, they are undeniably one of the Gem City's most loved bands. While the band clearly draws heavily from the vintage prog of King Crimson and ELP, Yakuza possess something that neither of those monumental dinosaurs ever possessed: a raging sense of humor. The playfulness in the melodies and the arrangements only further heightens their majestic, epic gestures and connects with their audience in a human and humane way. It was a testament to their audience as well that, despite not having been seen on stage for a year, this crowd knew every nuance of the band's music, despite the complete absence of any vocalization. So much for short-attention spans...

Squids Eye Records Presents: Yakuza Heart Attack/Astro Fang/Anamanaguchi/Starscream-Tonight @ Blind Bob's

...while the Squids Eye Records camp has been relatively hush thus far in 2009, tonight the venerable Dayton label will issue a twin shot that kicks off a string of releases that should take the label well into the new year. Tonight at Blind Bob's, the long-dormant Yakuza Heart Attack returns to the stage with a prog-minded fury that is seldom matched in the Gem City [or anywhere else for that matter]. The occasion? The release of their second album, titled simply II. The other prong in this dual attack tonight features the ubiquitous Astro Fang, who issues their debut EP this evening. SER has also brought in a pair of East Coast 8-Bit enthusiasts to bolster the evening: Anamanaguchi and Starscream. Head on down tonight to pick up these new releases before they're officially released...

VIDEO: Smug Brothers "Striking Relative Humor"

...this came across our desks this morning and we thought we'd pass it along to all of you. One of Dayton's newer outfits, Smug Brothers, have completed a video for the track "Striking Relative Humor", which is slated to appear on their upcoming Fortune Rumors album due out on Squids Eye Records this fall. Building off the buzz generated via their EP release series this past spring, the band have made a couple high-profile festival appearances in the last month with their Dayton debut slated for this year's installment of the Dayton Music Fest, taking place on October 3. The clip is a nice little lo-fi gem that holds well the band's aesthetic. Enjoy...

Myka 9

...it took us a while to finally get around to it, but once we threw on Myka 9 we were hooked. Building on his groundbreaking work in LA as a co-founder of the Legendary Freestyle Fellowship, Myka 9 hooked up with Fake Four Inc. (which Squids Eye Records mainman Tony Gilbert helped jumpstart), to release the soulful 1969. As the album title would suggest, Myka 9 is tapping into a bygone era focused more on spiritual awakening than superficial posturing. With Fake Four conspirator Factor laying down some funktastic beats, well-placed horn stabs adding punctuation, jazz-fusion flourishes, and featuring a cameo from Busdriver, this is food for the mind, body, and soul...

Squids Eye Records 2-Year Anniversary @ Blind Bob's 3.14.09

...as soon as we walked into Blind Bob's last night, we knew it was going to be a good one. Mixing in with the legions out on the town for a St. Patty's warm-up round, it was exciting to see so many people out specifically to support the lovable Dayton label, Squids Eye Records. Standing at the 2-year mark, the label's work in Dayton is impressive: they've helped to revive a once-flailing scene and redefine in many ways the Dayton sound. On this particular night, label head Tony Gilbert put together an eclectic bill, giving many of the unknown artists on Squids Eye Records a minute in the spotlight. From the drum-machine driven indie rock of Scott Deadelus and Joey Deady to the jazz-prog of Five Deadly Venoms to the folk-tinged laptop dance party of The Happy Planets, Squids Eye Records showed their range. Sadly, we missed the exciting conclusion of Cry Baby Genius and Astro Fang. By the time we departed, the staff had finally removed the last few tables near the stage as the crowd swelled to near-capacity. If you were there, we'd love to hear about it....

Yakuza Heart Attack/Southeast Engine/Jesse Remnant/Cry Baby Genius @ Pearl 8.28.08

...with the hordes gathered yet again last evening for the monthly Squids Eye Records showcase at Pearl, we walked in to catch opener Cry Baby Genius (aka Mike Payne, who also serves as drummer for Andrew & the Pretty Punchers and The Judy Blooms). Releasing his debut on this night, Cry Baby Genius prowled the stage area in a nearly trance-like state as his distinct cadence spilled out over the beats. At his most impassioned, CBG nearly tore out his own soul to get across to his audience. By the end of the set however, a failed attempt at a new track gave way to a playful freestyle that proved that while Cry Baby Genius may be intense, he still knows how to get a party started...

...although we've loved his debut record since it came out, this was the first opportunity we'd had to see Jesse Remnant live. With the no less a backing band than 3/4 of Shrug, Remnant's summery pop melodicism absolutely shined on this night. Although tuning issues seemed to plague Remnant for a large part of the set, it was overshadowed by his band's consummate musicianship, in particular the multi-instrumental showcase by Eric Cassidy. From the Beach Boys-flavored harmonies, to the GBV-style brevity, Remnant & co. delivered a set of flawless indie pop that has us hoping for more appearances very soon....

...on a rare Dayton appearance, a new stripped-down version of Southeast Engine stepped into the void and ushered in a set of powerful, earthy tunes. Although guitarist Adam Remnant seemed somewhat self-conscious on this performance by the quartet, he still propelled the band into a rousing set that had the audience dancing and singing along throughout. One of the highlights of the set was a song performed for the first time last night that featured an extended piano duet between Remnant and keyboardist Michael Lachman which served as an hypnotic diversion from the rollicking rocker that bookended the piece. We're looking for that one to appear on their Daytrotter session soon....

...closing out the evening, the long-awaited return of Yakuza Heart Attack drew a sizable crowd to their feet and the responded with their trademark high-octane nintendo prog in full force. While the band seemed a bit hesitant early on, the crowd's unwavering adulation seemed to fuel the band and they settled in and delivered the electronic equivalent of a classical masterpiece. As keyboardists Keith Rankin and Matt Emmons veered between incredibly inventive melodic themes and severe dissonance, the rhythm section of Justin Baker on bass and Chris Mengerink on drums provided a muscular backbone to the compositions. We can only hope that we don't have to wait another year to catch Yakuza Heart Attack again....

An Eye for an Eye

...it's another Thursday night, which you all know means some quality shows are coming yr way. The ubiquitous Squids Eye Records will be hosting their big monthly show tonight over at Pearl and you don't want to miss it. The big story here is that the extended hiatus of the incredible Yakuza Heart Attack has officially ended and they'll be performing tonight along with Southeast Engine (Misra Records), whose fiery brand of Americana is out for a short weekend jaunt which includes a stop in Rock Island, Illinois for an illustrious appearance for a Daytrotter session on Saturday. Stepping out as a sideman for older brother Adam in Southeast Engine, Jesse Remnant is slated for an all-too-rare solo set this evening. You've also got a special treat in Cry Baby Genius, who will be celebrating the release of his mixtape tonight as well...

...if all that isn't enough for you, earlybirds can swing over to Dayton Dirt Collective tonight for an eclectic bill. In from Columbus Ease the Medic and Winter Makes Sailors are out on tour for a few days that will take them into the deep South. Also on the bill are The Salt March and the jazz-tinged rock of newbies Black Wolf Fight...

Squids Eye Showcase feat. Grizzzzy Bear/The Gluons @ Pearl 7.3.08

...as the city of Dayton's fireworks display filled the sky outside of Pearl (we're not gonna discuss why we had fireworks on July 3), the bustling patio emptied into the club for the Squids Eye Records Showcase and openers The Gluons. From the outset, the duo wrestled interminably with feedback issues that were never truly resolved throughout their set. Although this might inhibit a set by other bands, Andrew Ashbrook seemed to feed off the ghost in the machine, using it as fuel and chiding the audience to dance. At last the music finally began and The Gluons tore through a handful of industrial-grade psyche nuggets. With only Ashbrook and bassist Matt Rose performing, the duo relies a pair of drum machines to round out their sound. While the mix was less than perfect, Ashbrook made up for it with a firey delivery. While The Gluons may look to the past for much of their sonic palette, their reinterpretation is certainly driving straight into the future...

...although the evening was billed as having Brian Baker of Grizzzzy Bear doing a solo set, it turned out that he brought his band with him. We couldn't have been happier. On this particular night we were endlessly amazed at this new lineup's ability to evolve material from the band's debut disc. On tracks like "Lovers" and "Since Day One, You Were My Son", the original arrangements were rather brief and dominated by drum machines and synths. As this lineup continues to solidify, the the windouts from the songs proper turn into endless labyrinths of guitar-driven explorations. The fact that impresses us so much is that these are arrangements, not improvisations. This is a unit so tightly knit at this point that it would appear as if whatever they decide to do, it will be done...

...while there were still three acts left on the bill (Ceschi Ramos, Dead By Wednesday, and The Sailing), we departed. If anyone has any info on how the last three bands were, we'd love to hear about it...

...You can see more pics here.
