REVIEW: State School-Cats In Boxes EP

...as the city of Dayton rallies itself against the external perceptions of it as a 'dying city' with the semi-annual Urban Nights event this evening with the acknowledgment of Dayton's Creative Class, we'd like to offer up one of our current favorite originals in the Gem City as a salute: the lovable trio known as State School. Over the past year, Eric/Erica/Noelle have induced more ear-to-ear smiles in this town than any other band, with their skit-like presentations and relentlessly sunny melodies, it's difficult to not hear/see this band without walking away feeling better about...well, everything...

...although some rough demos surfaced late last year, the band set to task in constructing their first proper release, the subsequent Cat In Boxes EP, with the help of local recording mastermind Mike Perkins [of The Esther Caulfield Orchestra]. With Perkins at the helm [and adding sublime guitar and pedal steel flourishes throughout], the band successfully translated to tape the intimacy and jovial interplay which defines their aesthetic. From the kickoff of "Let the Hurricane Roar", it is evident that State School possess a wicked sense of humor and irreverence [dig the "Glory, Glory, Hallelujah" singalong"] that punctuates and propels the lyrical content throughout. As they weave stories of riding bikes throughout Dayton, memorable nights spent imbibing with friends, and take stabs at everything from CSN&Y to avocado growth regions, their humble and self-deprecating tone keeps things from delving into a cyncial, snarky space...

...perhaps the most notable element of Cats In Boxes is State School's ability to make the most of a limited, primitive instrumental palate. While acoustic guitar makes appearances throughout [not to mention the subtle, yet potent, accompaniments from Perkins as mentioned previously], it is the prolific application of ukeleles, toy organs, kazoos, and any other noisemaker within reach that keeps this such a fun listen. Likewise, with such a lightweight instrumentation, State School are quite capable of infiltrating the smaller, more intimate listening spaces which we've found best to take in a live performance...

...put on the Cat In Boxes EP. Take a listen. If you don't find yourself smiling uncontrollably and dancing around yr room singing along, well, we may not be able to help you. State School will perform at the 2009 Dayton Music Fest at the Trolley Stop....

Announced: Poster-Tastic 2 @ Dayton Music Fest 09

...as if having so many great local and regional bands on tap for Dayton Music Fest 2009 wasn't enough to get you excited about the d8n music scene, local promoter and general woman-about-town Shelly 'Glad Girl' Hulce announced that her Poster-Tastic showcase returns again this year as an adjunct to DMF. Just like last year, Derailed Hair Salon [run by Austin & Mindy in the Oregon District] graciously agreed to host this stellar display of the visual representations of Dayton music on the night of DMF [which is Saturday, October 3]. Here's how to get yr posters shown:

Also please pass the word to other poster artists and give them my contact info.

You will need to hang your stuff by Oct. 1st. at the salon.
The exhibit will hang the whole month of Rocktober.

Eat Sugar Issue "It's Not Our Responsibility" Today

...while we told you all about the new Eat Sugar EP, It's Not Our Responsibility, back in the spring, today marks the official release for the world...

...First, a little background refresher: After releasing a self-titled debut EP in 2006, Eat Sugar-Aidan Bogosian (vocals), Mike McBride (synths), Greg Poneris (drums) and Jim Reynolds (bass and synths)- traveled throughout the region, ultimately heading to Europe for a short tour in early 2008. Around this time, the band met up with Brainiac/Enon alumni, producer John Schmersal, who agreed to work with the band on their sophomore effort. In taking the mobile version of Schmersal’s Notausgang studio to Poneris’ suburban Cincinnati home, the tracks that comprise the 7-song EP retain Eat Sugar’s spastic punk aesthetic while the spacey, synth-fueled arrangements are given room to breathe. Taking cues from contemporaries such as The Faint and Death from Above 1979, this slab is poised to fill dance floors everywhere, particularly if a suitable remix should emerge...

...this came across our desks this morning and we thought we'd pass it along to all of you. One of Dayton's newer outfits, Smug Brothers, have completed a video for the track "Striking Relative Humor", which is slated to appear on their upcoming Fortune Rumors album due out on Squids Eye Records this fall. Building off the buzz generated via their EP release series this past spring, the band have made a couple high-profile festival appearances in the last month with their Dayton debut slated for this year's installment of the Dayton Music Fest, taking place on October 3. The clip is a nice little lo-fi gem that holds well the band's aesthetic. Enjoy...

Dayton Music Fest Submissions Open Today

...that's right kids! It's only March and we're already talking about October. Arguably one of the biggest events on the annual Dayton Music calendar, Dayton Music Fest opened its submissions today. You can submit HERE. They've made the process nearly painless, so head on over now and make sure yr band gets in on this event...

Dayton Music Fest 08 -10.4.08

...although last year we were able to cover a fair amount of the Dayton Music Fest, we admittedly fell for the hype surrounding the potential for a sellout at Gilly's in anticipation of Robert Pollard's homecoming show with his new band, Boston Spaceships. As a result, our account of the evening focuses on the action at Gilly's. Still, we were very excited about what we saw...

...kicking things off were last-minute additions, Hospital Garden. Having seen them a number of times over the last few months, we felt the band turned in one of their best sets. Likewise, The Sailing rose to the occasion and delivered a powerful set for a swelling audience. At long last, Boston Spaceships took the stage following a surprise introduction by none other than GBV alumni, Don Thrasher. For the part of the set that we caught, Pollard and co. combed through a flurry of material from Brown Submarine, as well as recent releases by The Takeovers and Pollard's recent solo album, Robert Pollard is off to Business. Although we were not fortunate enough to hear any classic material, Pollard's newest live band might very well be one of the best lineups Pollard has ever assembled...

...after staying stationary for way too long on this night, we finally ventured over to Blind Bob's to catch a few of our favorites at DMF. Rolling into the Oregon District, the energy on the street was great. People were everywhere and seeming to have a great time. We caught the last half of Astro Fang's set, which may have been their best ever. The sound in the room was much improved over our previous venture into Blind Bob's, which we were very pleased about. We caught a few songs from the new lineup of Lab Partners, and they likewise sounded great. With the night waning, we headed out to try and stop into one more club...


...we got to Oregon Express just in time to catch a few songs from Human Reunion. By this point, we were getting a bit burned out, but the band sounded great...


...although we had a pretty good time, it would have been nice to have seen more. For more photos, go here.

...well, kids, after weeks and weeks of talking about it and everyone throwing in their two cents as to why its a good/bad thing, tonight is Dayton Music Fest. No matter who you try and see, it looks like yr gonna having a good time doing it. You can get a refresher on the schedule over here.

LAST MINUTE SCHEDULE CHANGE: Over at Canal Street Tavern, The Story Changes is now playing at midnight and Magic Jackson will be playing at 1 am. Please make a note of that and spread the word...

Blind Bob's Moving Forward

...after all the backlash with the closing of Nite Owl in May and the subsequent announcement that the venue would evolve in Blind Bob's, a thick cloud of skepticism hovered over the space. With various reports coming in as to when, and even if, the club would re-open, Blind Bob's made its presence known today on Myspace. The club announced plans to re-open on August 16 and already has a booking person lined up. Musicians are encouraged to contact the club to start setting up dates. The club is also slated to participate in the 2008 edition of the Dayton Music Fest. While it remains to be seen just exactly how Blind Bob's will fit into the local music scene, we can only estimate that it's presence will offer additional opportunities...

Dayton Music Fest/Saturday Night Recap

Walking into the Oregon District on Saturday evening, the electricity in the air was apparent. People were genuinely buzzed about the Dayton Music Fest....

Obviously, blanket coverage of the event is impossible. You go with your gut and try to see as much as you can. The following is by no means intended to be a fair representation of the event, only my experience....

first stop was Jasper Wall Cafe to see XL427 and Joe Anderl. Having never been to this venue, I found it extremely subdued and cozy. It was exciting to see so many people out so early in the evening...

we then proceeded over to the incredibly underutilized Tumbleweed Connection to catch Kentucky Overflow. On the first song that we caught, the power went out on stage and the guys were scrambling to come up with something entertaining to fill the void. Once electricity returned, Kentucky Overflow dished out a good set filled with plenty of southern-fried goodness and take-no-prisoners guitar shredding...

we made a quick stop in Nite Owl and caught the tail end of The Goody Two Shoes set. They were characteristically dressed to the nines and desperately in need of some tuning. People seemed to dig it though...

next up, we ventured down to Oregon Express to catch Fairmount Girls from Cincinnati. This was one of the best sets I saw. Their vintage indie pop was perfectly delivered and they were quite obviously having a good time. The OE was really crowded right around this time, making it difficult to find anywhere to be with all the tables and chairs taking up all the floor space....

next up, we headed down to the other end of the district tothe Trolley Stop to try and catch Mellonballer, who the organizers were touting as this year's great find. I'm going to have to disagree with this one. Was not a fan...

we then hustled back to the Tumbleweed to catch Human Reunion turn in one of the best sets of the night. Even with bassist Alan confined to a stool after a recent surgery, the energy was still at near-lethal levels. Any band that starts their set by throwing out a blow-up doll certainly has my attention...


after the Human Reunion set, we decided to make the long walk up to Canal Street Tavern to catch Enon. It was a tough call, as we knew we'd miss some other really good stuff in the Oregon District. Upon arriving at CST, we discovered we had just missed the American Static. The venue quickly reached capacity in anticipation of the festival headliner. After what seemed like an interminable wait in sweltering conditions while Enon set up, the band finally kicked in and gave the hordes what they came for. While the performance seemed somewhat subdued, the music was anything but. With their new album coming out Tuesday, we were curious to see what they would pull out. Focusing on the more guitar-driven material in their catalog, Enon turned in rock set that reminded everyone in the room why Dayton music is such a unique phenomenon....

Dayton Music Fest/Friday Night Recap

On an unusually warm October evening, deep within the confines of the rustic Oregon Express, the 3rd Annual Dayton Music Fest got under way. Festival organizer Dan Clayton commenced the festival with his announcement of opener, Towhee.

As one of the breakout bands of the 2006 version of the festival, Towhee has emerged as an accomplished outfit in the past year. With the release of their debut, Streetlights, earlier this year, Towhee has garnered some favorable press and continue to develop their slightly angular but melodic material into what we can only hope will become a local fixture.



The all-too-elusive Reutschle carried on the proceedings with a succinct set of meticulously crafter power pop. Despite the threat of being shocked due to a sweat-soaked microphone, Mike Reutschle and company continued to shell out one giant sugary hook after another...



As one of the few bands in the DMF that are signed to a label (Reverb Records, to be specific), Lab Partners nearly turned the humble little club into a full-blown arena. With their anthems soaring into the lofty heights of such heavyweights as Oasis and Smashing Pumpkins, Lab Partners capitalized on this opportunity and delivered what will certainly stand as one of the highlights of this weekend....
