VIDEO: The Northwest Ordinance on Friday Night Fu

...the night before we had The Northwest Ordinance out to play The Buddha Den Showcase at South Park Tavern last month, they went in to the television studios at the famed WKRP in Cincinnati to tear through a few numbers for one of the region's more interesting tidbits, Friday Night Fu. Combining their love of kung fu and rock n' roll into an incredible spectacle of a show, the show has become quite the outlet for regional talent to ride the airwaves into homes around the area. Here's a pair of tunes The Northwest Ordinance threw down while they were there:

The Buddha Den Showcase Presents: The Northwest Ordinance @ South Park Tavern 2.28.09

...every month we host The Buddha Den Showcase, we're just so stoked to bring in our favorite bands for what amounts to a glorified basement party. The best part is, we know we'll never run out of beer at South Park Tavern. Really, this format was made for The Northwest Ordinance. With severed mannequin heads and Mexican wrestling masks dotting the stage, NWO invited a number of friends from other Dayton bands to kick up the mayhem. With contributions from members of Mountain Screamer, The Goody Two Shoes, and local radio DJ, Spex, NWO served up a night of great rock n' roll fun...

The Buddha Den Showcase Presents: The Northwest Ordinance @ South Park Tavern-TONIGHT

...we've been waiting for what seems like forever to finally hook up with one of our Dayton faves, The Northwest Ordinance, to do our monthly Buddha Den Showcase with us over at South Park Tavern. If you haven't caught these guys yet, they're one of the most fun and raucous bands in town right now. Full of vintage punk energy and great songs, their debut, State of Ohio, made our Best of Dayton 2008 list...

...we have it on good authority that the band has a slew of special guests lined up to join them tonight onstage. Whatever happens, people are gonna be talking about it for a while. Music starts at 9 PM sharp. Did we mention that this is a FREE/ALL AGES show??? Yeah, see you there...

PROFILE: Hans Condor

...we know you still have a thing for rock n' roll. So do we. That' why we're so excited to bring you this little interview we did with Nashville's Hans Condor. We spoke with guitarist/vocalist Charles Kasper in between tour stops. Enjoy...

The Buddha Den:
How about we hit rewind for a minute and get a little Hans Condor history? How did you all meet up in Nashville? What led to the formation of Hans Condor? Where'd you get that name???

Charles Kasper: I came to Tennessee from Iowa via Alaska. Eric (Elsner/drums) came down from Rochester by way of Seattle, and Erik (Holcomb/bass, singing) moved to TN after Alabama and Texas. Everyone wound up living in East Nashville, working, drinking, wasting time, and trying play in different bands. Over time we all eventually played shows together or wound up working the same jobs and got to know each other while serving time in that particular microcosm. Hans Condor had been trying to get off the ground for a while and when our other projects dissolved/lives went to shit, we said fuck it all and took flight. The name refers to the sex move the "Hans condor" also called the "caged bird","dirty bird", "foul fowl" or the "randy pigeon".

TBD: Within a few seconds it's pretty obvious you guys are pretty into Detroit rock a la The Stooges/MC5. What other influences do you hold dear? Any contemporaries yr hot for?

CK: Silverhead, Motorhead, NWA, Meat Loaf, Jack Oblivion, Billy Joel, The Pogues, James Carr, Electric Light Orchestra, Rose Tattoo, The Animals, The Kids, Dr. Hook, Warren Zevon, Mudhoney, ... you can see we listen to everything except the man. We hope that comes out in our music, ya know hatin' up the man and all, but also the unlikely elements one might not immediately associated with our move. Most popular music kinda sounds like the man. Contemporary artists...hmmmm. We like bands that we get to play shows with and get Cd's/records from. We've met so many great musicians over the past months and they all have their own powerful swagger and that's what really incites us to keep our moves alive and powerful. That's beautiful. the people we meet and play with along the way, they jam, they drink with us, they aren't in that damn box and that makes them more relevant to us and what we like doing than the man's music.

TBD: Looking at yr itinerary it seems like yr a band that loves the road. How much time do you spend out? What keeps you out on the road so much? Do you see yourselves as more of a touring band than a studio band?

CK: We don't have homes, jobs, or much else to lose, so we just try to stay moving. We are also ready to rip the lid off some new tunes. We enjoy the studio as much as the road, so we will probably let the van take a nap and track some moves we've been stepping into.

TBD: We're very excited that you've buddied up with Daytonians The Northwest Ordinance for a few dates following yr stop through Dayton late last year. How did you two bands hook up?

CK: I think I was on the computer randomly listening to music this past summer and found their tunes, dug it, and started talking to them about doing a show together. Though that summer was hazy, so those creeps might have a different story. We lived it in November. We'll live it again. It sounds good and we're looking forward to it.

TBD: With so many bands out there these days, what sets Hans Condor apart from the pack? What keeps you guys motivated to keep on?

CK: An extra testicle, toilet humor, and speed...lots of speed.

TBD: Anything else you'd like The Buddha Den readers to know???

CK: We all are electrically charged. We all are troubadours. We all wield the sword of song and live a few feet off the ground. We are often mistaken for gentlemen. We will all tear this curtain away and see a new sun rise. Free-fall speed doesn't lie, but the man does.

...Hans Condor will be rolling into Oregon Express this Saturday, January 31. Along for the ride are locals The Northwest Ordinance and Mountain Screamer...

The Northwest Ordinance/Moutain Screamer @ Oregon Express 6.19.08

...while we may have shown up to the Oregon Express a few minutes later than planned, we figured we would at least catch some of the opening act. We also didn't expect the opening act to be the only out-of-town band on the bill, Church of the Red Museum. Apparently, there was some confusion as to who was to play when and the show started promptly at 10 PM, which from our experience never happens. Arriving at 10:35, we completely missed the first band. If you're planning to attend a show at OE in the near future, please make a of this as you may very well miss some of the show. To add insult to injury, we were told that COTRM were incredible. We hope to remedy this soon...

...after stewing on the fact we missed a band we truly wanted to catch, we settled in to check out Mountain Screamer for the first time. While their Myspace tracks suggest a rough, sludgy sound as evidenced on their track on The Buddha Den Summer Sampler, in live performance Mountain Screamer are a powerhouse of a duo. Taking cues from the blues-derived guitar/drum duo sect, these guys infuse their brand with a whole lot of punk, Sun Records-style country, and a whole lot of Crazy Horse. Drummer Tubba Bumps propels the duo with his incessant stomp, throwing in dance-punk rhythms and tasteful tambourine work. Although guitarist JP Magical might be a bit of a shoegazer at times, his huge, bluesy riffage is traced with a nice punk edge that keeps the band's sound from veering into retro pastiche. While the band's set may have run a little long on this night, we're officially declaring Mountain Screamer a must-see band...

...closing out the evening, we had one of our favorite locals, The Northwest Ordinance. On this night, the band tore through tracks off their State of Ohio disc, as well as a number of new tracks, with a rapid-fire fury that never gave the audience time to catch their breath. We found the band's distinctive blend of punk/garage/grunge at it's most raw, intense state last night as the band truly played as if they had something to prove. If you're still waiting to catch these guys, get on with it...

The Northwest Ordinance/The Buddha Den DJ Hour @ Pearl 6.26.08

...here's what we played in The Buddha Den DJ Hour at Pearl last night...

8-Bit Revival "Led Astrea" from Under the Fairweather
Accidently On Purpose "AKA" from Miminari EP (out July 4)
Captain of Industry "Gold For Your Mouth" and "Healthy Spines" from The Bronze (out July 28)
De Novo Dahl (Nashville) "Shakedown" from Move Every Muscle, Make Every Sound
Electric Banana "Denim on Denim" from Denim on Denim
The Gluons "The Modern Late at Nights" from Meet the Gluons
Grizzzzy Bear "Stale Body" from Grizzzzy Bear
Jordan Hull "On To Me" from Jordan Hull
Human Reunion "Red Ape" and "Hug Jail" from Squids Eye Sampler
The Interiors (Chicago) "I'm So Happy" from The Interiors
Jet Kid Committe "LOL" from Dayton, OH Vol. 1
My Latex Brain "Capitalist Knife" from Good Is Dead
Nightbeast "Jungle First Date" from Inside Jokes for Outside Folks
Pretty & Nice (Boston) "Grab Your Nets" from Blue & Blue EP
Jesse Remanant "Better Than You" from The Human Cannonball
Toads and Mice "Ghengis Kahn" from Toads and Mice
Towhee "Streetlights" from Streetlights
The Whathaveya "The Other One" from The Whathaveya Explodes! (out July 4)

...following our set of local tracks, The Northwest Ordinance lunged headlong into a furious set of brilliant garage-grunge. Serving as a lightning rod stretching back through Detroit-via-NYC-via-Seattle, this band knows its lineage and serves to update the mold. As the band tore through a number of newer tracks as well as those from the most recent album, State of Ohio, their raw intensity left most of the audience stunned. Navigating string breaks and various technical issues, the band might need a few adjustments in balancing out their levels for maximum effect. Regardless, NWO stands as one of the most interesting bands in Dayton at the moment...

The Northwest Ordinance CD Release Show w/The Lions Rampant & The Goody Two Shoes 2.16.08

...on a rather mild Saturday night for February, we wandered down the Oregon Express to catch we were certain was to be a grand night of raunchy rock n' roll. Well, let us say we were by no means disappointed....

...as we arrived, there seemed to be a bit of stir over opener Waterbear's early dismissal from the stage. Various accounts circulated as to the reasoning, but it seemed as if the evening had started late and was running behind, thus the soundman made a judgment call to cut their set short. Alas, the rock pressed on as The Goody Two Shoes took the stage, dressed impeccably in vintage attire as always. With requisite technical difficulties and tuning a standing concern, the band still managed to throw out a handful of somewhat engaging tunes. While the audience seemed to enjoy it, we continue to be bemused by the whole experience....

...we then made an attempt to swing over to the Nite Owl and catch some of the more nuanced indie pop flavors on tap this evening. We rolled in just in time to catch the beginning of Pomegranate's set, who were up from Cincinnati. With their audience fully in singalong mode, the band launched into some perfectly crafted indie pop, guitars winding fluidly around the steady pulsations of the rhythm section as the songs gracefully variated between subtle and bombastic, often recalling a litany of 80s British guitar heroes. While we only caught a few songs, we're eager to hear more from this young band...

...upon returning to the Oregon Express, the stage erupted with the sound of Cincinnati's The Lions Rampant. With this being their second visit to the Gem City within a month, the audience was primed for the band's blistering brand of blues-infused garage. Digging deep into the most primal elements of rock n' roll, The Lions Rampant remind us all that rock n' roll is, in fact, very much alive...

...in celebration of the release of their debut album, State of Ohio, The Northwest Ordinance took to the stage in Mexican wrestling masks and proceeded to launch into their patented brand of staggering punk. Drifting from straightforward punk to staggering, lurching rhythms, the band demonstrated its unique range of interpretation. While some implied that a little more shine would be nice, it seems as if this band thrives on the brink of collapse. As the band mixed in new material alongside songs from their album, the audience whipped itself into a frenzy, concluding the evening in pure rock n' roll bliss...

State Of Ohio

...as one of the most promising bands we've seen in the last several months, The Northwest Ordinance has been laying low as of late. We'll forgive them, as they've been hard at work behind the scenes putting the finishing touches on what we believe will be one of the best albums to come out of Dayton in 2008. Really, just take a look at that cover art...

...We got our mitts on their upcoming album, State of Ohio, a while back and we're pretty enthralled with it. With a tasteful vintage punk/garage flavoring and a dash of Seattle and some herky-jerkiness for good measure, the dizzying twists and turns and tempo shifts will keep it on repeat for days....

...we're giving notice now: The Northwest Ordinance will be releasing this album on Saturday, February 16 at The Oregon Express. It's gonna be a great bill, which includes one of our new favorites, The Lions Rampant, who put on an amazing show last weekend. If you missed that one, don't make the same mistake again...

The Northwest Ordinance @ Nite Owl 10.1.07

Despite one of the latest starts for a local show that I can recall, the Northwest Ordinance opened the festivities at Nite Owl last night with a bang. With their machine gun fire-style set, NWO never let up the momentum. Guitarist/singer Chris Karnage's twisting guitar lines and frenetic stage show kept the energy at maximum levels during their set. Pairing up with guitarist Pat Reilly, the two recalled everything from Wire to Mudhoney. With their debut album State of Ohio slated to hit the streets any day now, this is gonna be a band to watch in the next few months...

too bad it was a Monday....

Goody! Goody!

Mondays have been really happening lately at the Nite Owl, and tonight is picking up the bill....

Four bands. The Goody Two Shoes from Dayton doing their female-fronted garage thing. The Northwest Ordinance throwin' down some HQ post-punk on ya. Outer Spacists from Columbus have an interesting Garage via Jefferson Airplane flavor. Finally, Jena Berlin from Philadelphia offers up some essential post-hardcore with extremely melodic vocals. Some important people have said some nice things about them.

For a Monday, I don't really think you can ask for more....
