VIDEO: Buffalo Killers "It's a Shame" @ LaundroMatinee

...Indianapolis-based music blog My Old Kentucky Blog has been working for a while now on a brilliant project called LaundroMatinee in which they partner with a radio station at a local school in Indiana, bring in great touring acts for a recording session (much like Daytrotter) and then put up the audio AND video for the world to enjoy. Great idea, right? Well, they just put up a session from Cincinnati faves Buffalo Killers featuring "It's a Shame" from last year's Let It Ride album. Hearing these guys thrown down in a great sounding room like this is just an absolute treat for the ears. Have a look/listen:

Willie Nelson to Headline Nelsonville Music Festival

...although there are several good music festivals in Ohio every year, we think it's safe to say that one that might be overlooked is the Nelsonville Music Festival, which takes place out Robbins Crossing at Hocking College. Presented by non-profit arts organization Stuarts Opera House and buried out in the lush country of Hocking Hills, this seems like a near-ideal place to catch the legendary Willie Nelson, who is slated to headline the 3-day fest. Other notables include Cincinnati's Buffalo Killers and Athens fave, Wheels on Fire. You can grab all the ticket info here.

Day of Dead Art Show feat. Buffalo Killers/Marijuana Johnson/The Host-Tonight @ Pearl

...the good kids over at Pearl have a great show for you tonight that you simply can't anywhere else in Dayton. Cincinnati faves Buffalo Killers (pictured) will headline as a warm-up for a two week stint with The Black Crowes that starts this weekend. If you missed them earlier this year, these guys are a must-see band in the region. Also up tonight is the return of local stoner/sludge fiends Marijuana Johnson. Rounding out the bill are The Host from Cincinnati. We'll see you there....

Buffalo Killers/Andrew & the Pretty Punchers @ Pearl 5.8.08

...as the precipitation died down just long enough for everyone to congregate for what appeared to be the first great show of May, we made our way to the Pearl and found that a sizable audience had already gathered in anticipation of the opening act, Andrew & the Pretty Punchers. Having seen the band numerous times (most recently at The Buddha Den Showcase in April), we could not have been happier that the band had been given the nod to open for such a high profile show. On this particular evening, the band sounded very good and delivered their set with a sense of purpose, seeking to prove to all in attendance that they did indeed deserve this opportunity. While missing the mark on a few occasions, the band never withdrew from attempting to push themselves and their audience to even greater heights. Just before the last song, leader Andy Smith lost his spectacles and, perhaps due to impaired eyesight, burned with searing intensity on the final song of the set...

...with nary a missed step between sets, Buffalo Killers roared into action. Their trademark blues-inflected vintage rock n' roll enraptured the audience on this night, drawing the crowd in and keeping them there for the next 45 minutes. Recalling the finest moments of Cream, the Stones, James Gang, and just a hint of late-period Beatles, the band's ability to edit their improvisations down to a maximum intensity stands as perhaps their most brilliant achievement. While the evening was essentially a warm-up for their upcoming tour opening for The Black Keys, Buffalo Killers by no means phoned this one in. Even after nearly an hour, they were still ready to dish out an encore, fan-favorite "Homegrown". And with that, we ended the evening with the rush of gold old rock n' roll...

Buffalo Killers/Andrew & the Pretty Punchers-Tonight @ Pearl

...kids, we've got a REALLY good one for you tonight down at Pearl. You simply can't afford to miss this one. Headlining the evening are those modern/vintage monoliths, Buffalo Killers. Their undeniable songcraft and musicianship has earned them some serious recognition over the past year: a tour opening for The Black Crowes, Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys producing their new album. Yeah, they're that good. Opening the evening will be locals Andrew & the Pretty Punchers (who performed at The Buddha Den Showcase last month...), still in the studio working on their debut that we can't wait to hit the streets...Before, between, and after the bands you've gots DJs Jay Madewell and Kevin Vaughn who plan to keep the party going all night. We'll see ya down there....

Buffalo Killers/Switchblade Serenade/Captain of Industry-Tonight @ Nite Owl 12.7.07

...arriving a bit late on this dreary, cold, rainy December evening, we only caught the last few numbers by the mighty Captain of Industry. In their case it isn't the quantity of songs we heard, but the quality. In the few songs we witnessed, our appetite was only further whetted for the upcoming release from one of Dayton's finest...


...in the sweet spot for the evening, local gararge/trash practitioners Switchblade Serenade celebrated the release of their debut, the No One Cares EP. While their distinctive brand of no-holds-barred rock n' roll won over most of the audience, their demeanor on stage left something to be desired as far as we were concerned. On previous occasions we'd seen and heard about the antics of this band and were prepared for a full-frontal onslaught on this evening. It was not to be, however, and we were left to stomp and shout through the set...



...batting clean-up this night was Cincinnati Golden Boys, Buffalo Killers. From the first note of their set, with the crowd pressed up to the stage and hoisting libations to the band, Buffalo Killers were not about to phone in this show to Dayton. With a blistering performance that was more akin to a Royal Albert Hall performance than just another night at the Nite Owl, Buffalo Killers' passion for rock n' roll and their dedication to the purest vein of the pursuit was in full evidence on this evening. For this, we could not have been more grateful...
