My Latex Brain/Accidently on Purpose/Switchblade Serenade @ Canal Street Tavern 2.29.08

...with it being a leap year and all, it could have gone either way last night over at Canal Street Tavern. In fact, it went both...

...after missing the debut of opener Swell, we came in on an reduced lineup of Switchblade Serenade. Following the departure of guitarist Matt Webster, the remaining trio is soldiering on with incredible intensity. The sleeker outfit delivered their trademark gutter/garage with an intensity and directness that only bolstered their sound and left us hopeful for whatever might come next from this highly unpredictable group...

...as this was our first report on Accidently on Purpose, our expectations were high. Digging way back into an early 90s/pre-Nirvana brand of grungy punk, the band impressed us with a distinctive blend of punk/art-rock influences. Charismatic Greta Smak prowled the stage with burning intensity, drawing all eyes onto her and her band for the duration of their blistering set. As soon as you get a chance, be sure to catch them...

...at last, the moment of celebration on this evening had arrived, as the post-industrial juggernaut known as My Latex Brain unleashed its new album, Good Is Dead. Although there was lengthy delay due to myriad technical difficulties, the band persevered, channeling their frustrations into their performance and elevating the intensity of their sound to nearly unbearable levels. As bassist Chris Corn and drummer Roger Owsley initiated a sonic Blitzkrieg through the venue, singer Hoops screeched and howled his mutilated rantings, the sum which resulted in an unparalleled assault on all sensory intake. Truly, MLB is one of the most exciting and inventive bands in Dayton at the moment...

Grizzzzy Bear/Choir of Two Ohm Cicadas @ Front St. 2.15.08

...(we apologize in advance for a lack of visual evidence to accompany this report. Due to technical difficulties, we were unable to photograph this evening. In our defense, we are a small outfit and, to be quite honest, any photography would not have done the event justice.)...

....buried deep in the back of the Front Street complex, Dethfits' base of operations doubled as a venue on this particular evening. As we navigated through the ice fields and made our way into the cavernous space, we learned we had arrived just after My Latex Brain had finished. Next up would be the Choir of Two Ohm Cicadas, who we knew precious little about. The duo proceeded to launch into what was largely derided by this audience. While we here at The Buddha Den relish good noise rock and ambient offerings, on this particular evening Choir of Two Ohm Cicadas offered us little in the way of any texturing or subtle melodic content which would drive music of this style. A trace of melody would bubble up on occasion, but for the most part the grind of the band's sound was simply more than anyone could really tolerate on this evening. Perhaps a shorter set might have been the ticket...

...as the audience regrouped, local faves Grizzzzy Bear prepared to hit the stage for the second time this week. Struggling through some early technical difficulties, the band opened again with a new piece that strongly favors the band's metal tendencies. While it is obviously a work-in-progress, on this night the band seemed somewhat more comfortable with the piece. Hopefully the band will iron out their ideas and trim it down to a manageable piece. As Grizzzzzy Bear proceeded with their set, they laid heavily into some their best tracks off their debut disc. The audience lurched back at the band, singing along with some of the most infectious songs in Dayton at the moment. As Grizzzzy Bear seems to be embracing a more muscular, metal edge these days, we are curious to see if they will succeed in integrating this element into their eclectic amalgam which was so successful on their debut disc, or if they will abandon the melodies in favor of the grind. With the inclusion of a cover of "Blitzkreig Bop" near the end of their set, we're a little anxious to find out. Time will tell....

....we apologize for not having reports on sets by Akillis Green and Switchblade Serenade (who were performing as a trio on this evening). If anyone has the lowdown, we'd love to hear it...

Choir of 2 Ohm Cicadas/Swithcblade Serenade/Akillis Green/Grizzzzy Bear/My Latex Brain-Tonight @ Front St Warehouse

...it seems the bloom has fallen off of Valentine's Day, as Dethfits celebrates their Deth to Valentine's Day show this evening. On hand you have the politically-charged industrial grind of My Latex Brain (whose new album, Good as Dead, hits on Feb 29), one of our favorites Grizzzzy Bear, the cowpunk of Akillis Green, the gutter/garage/trash of Switchblade Serenade, and the rarely-seen Choir of 2 Ohm Cicadas. All this for free. Yes, free. Just remember to go in the E door. See you there....

Luxury Pushers/Sexicon/Switchblade Serenade-Tonight @ Pearl

...you really couldn't ask for more from your rock n' roll tonight, as the Pearl will be hosting three of Dayton's most unapologetic acts. Headlining the evening will be the living legends, Luxury Pushers. Although Eric Purtle is currently out of commission, expect nothing less than pure, unadulterated, punk rock n' roll. In the sweet spot you've got Sexicon, who we're still waiting on to put up some sound clips. Opening the night will be gararge/trash masters Switchblade Serenade, who we featured a video clip by the other day. If you missed it, go ahead and rewind....

VIDEO: Switchblade Serendade "No One Cares"

...while we love their debut EP No One Cares, we'd be remiss to deny that the forum in which Switchblade Serenade truly shines is on the stage. Well, they've put out a fantastic new clip of the title track from their EP, showing the band on the road, backstage, and in front of the kids. The footage is perfectly twitchy, with plenty of footage of Dayton nightlife. We're really impressed with the clip and hope that this is merely a taste of a full-length Switchblade Serenade video release in the future....

...if you like what you see here, be sure to head out to Pearl this Thursday night to catch Switchblade Serenade, along with Sexicon and local legends Luxury Pushers.

Buffalo Killers/Switchblade Serenade/Captain of Industry-Tonight @ Nite Owl 12.7.07

...arriving a bit late on this dreary, cold, rainy December evening, we only caught the last few numbers by the mighty Captain of Industry. In their case it isn't the quantity of songs we heard, but the quality. In the few songs we witnessed, our appetite was only further whetted for the upcoming release from one of Dayton's finest...

...in the sweet spot for the evening, local gararge/trash practitioners Switchblade Serenade celebrated the release of their debut, the No One Cares EP. While their distinctive brand of no-holds-barred rock n' roll won over most of the audience, their demeanor on stage left something to be desired as far as we were concerned. On previous occasions we'd seen and heard about the antics of this band and were prepared for a full-frontal onslaught on this evening. It was not to be, however, and we were left to stomp and shout through the set...

...batting clean-up this night was Cincinnati Golden Boys, Buffalo Killers. From the first note of their set, with the crowd pressed up to the stage and hoisting libations to the band, Buffalo Killers were not about to phone in this show to Dayton. With a blistering performance that was more akin to a Royal Albert Hall performance than just another night at the Nite Owl, Buffalo Killers' passion for rock n' roll and their dedication to the purest vein of the pursuit was in full evidence on this evening. For this, we could not have been more grateful...

Brimstone Howl/Switchblade Serenade @ Pearl 10.25.07

No one at the Pearl last night was entirely sure where the crowd was. It was a great bill and the turnout was exceptionally thin. We presumed most everyone was saving it up for Halloween weekend....

Regardless, Brimstone Howl brought their bluesy-garage-pop sound into town and it was a real treat. Although they were somewhat baffled by the void between band and audience at the Pearl, they still delivered a rollicking set...

With what can only be described as drunken abandon, Switchblade Serenade took the evening to a blistering new level, as the group delivered what was the best set we've seen by the band. Firing on all cylinders and feeding off the energy of the swelling audience, Switchblade's affinity for raunchy garage was on full display. The new material offered the promise of a remarkable debut album, which is currently in the works...

Brimstone Howl/Switchblade Serenade/Atomic Johnny-Tonight @ Pearl!

Your good friends at Do Tell Records and Fab Gear are teaming up and totally doing you a favor tonight. Garage goodness will overflow from that most 50s of all Dayton landmarks, The Pearl, tonight and out into the streets of the Gem City. Brimstone Howl (Alive Records) is out on tour bringing their hip-shaking, super-charged, bluesy garage into town. Switchblade Serenade is Dayton's most notorious garage supergroup doused in and dripping with mayhem. Atomic Johnny offers up purist garage with a flair for the theatrical. Before, between, and after the bands, the host of Fab Gear, Jay Madewell, will be spinning your favorite tracks of 60s and 70s garage, soul, french pop, and new wave.

you know where we'll be tonight....see you there!

Switchblade Serenade/Rumble CLub/Akillis Green @ Canal Street Tavern 10.4.07

Even on the eve of such a monumental local event, Canal Street Tavern drew a sizable crowd out to enjoy a night full of raw rock n' roll goodness....

...Akillis Green opened the night with their purist rockabilly. Drinkin' and cussin' all through a set riddled throughout with David Allen Coe tunes, these boys got everyone good and rowdy to start the evening...

...up from Covington, KY, Rumble Club hit the stage with their greaser looks and big rockabilly sound. Despite their bass player pulling out all the stops as he carried his upright out onto tables, stood on the bass itself, and generally just manhandled the beast of an instrument, Rumble Club found it difficult to win over the Canal Street Audience this night...

...significantly more successful at engaging the audience was local faves, Switchblade Serenade. Having seen their debut several months ago, I was somewhat skeptical as to how this would all go down. I am pleased to say that after a few road jaunts and some time spent in the studio recently, Switchblade Serenade has emerged as a serious garage juggernaut. Dishing out searing psychedelia just as easily as primal garage, you're going to want to keep an eye on this one...

Catch My Disease

Over at Canal Street Tavern tonight, you're gonna catch some real attitude. These bands mean business.

Opening the night will be the punkabilly of Akillis Green. Having seen them at Pearl recently, they put on an excellent, raw, high-energy set. Definitely veering more toward the rockabilly musically, they've got plenty of punk attitude to spare.

Next up we have Rumble Club from Covington, KY. This is some serious psycho/rockabilly with heavy doses of Cash piled on top. Can't imagine this one being any less than stellar. Frontman/axeman Jack Coray is a real guitar slinger, doing everyone from Rev. Horton Heat to Link Wray.

Closing the night, the unapologetic trashy garage punk of local supergroup Switchblade Serenade. With their members having done time in virtually every garage band that's sprung up in Dayton over the last several years, this is gonna be a group to watch in the coming months as they prepare their debut salvo. There is absolutely no way of telling what they're gonna deliver tonight....be there!
